“Slow, joyless, and loaded with unintentionally humorous moments, Breaking Dawn Part 1 may satisfy the Twilight faithful, but it's strictly for fans of the franchise.”

The Hollywood Reporter

“An eventful but bloodless first half of the smash series' finale.”

The actors have long since been set in their performances, and there are no surprises here. In the end, given how little goes on in Breaking Dawn — Part 1 despite the major plot points, what you're left with is to gaze at the three leads, all of whom have their constituencies and reasons for being eminently watchable. The only hope is they'll have more to do next time around.

EW’s Grade: C-

“The overall message of Breaking Dawn is that humans must suffer on this earth. Especially women. Jeez, pregnancy and childbirth, staged with exorbitant production-design attention to gyno-catastrophe, look like scenes of full-on, fright-night horror.”

The New York Times

“Dawn isn’t the only thing that gets broken in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I,” the latest and best of the movies about a girl, her vampire and their impossible, ridiculously appealing — yes, I surrendered — love story. Marked by a canny mix of violence and chastity, the franchise has always had plenty of broken heads to go along with its pure thoughts, but here it also features a marital bed reduced to kindling after a rough night. If that doesn’t sound like the series that has kept millions of prepubescent viewers virtuously rapt, you’re right. But little Bella is all grown up now, and while Edward is still more zomboid than juicily predatory, this time not everything else on screen is dead, too.” — Manohla Dargis

Rating: 1/5

“Despite her marriage to the vampire Edward, a pregnancy for Bella sparks a new round of angst for all still concerned. This franchise, meanwhile, feels like it will live forever”
